Biography

Repertoire

After studying the piano and conducting at the Paris National Conservatoire, Jean-Luc Tingaud was chosen by Manuel Rosenthal to be his assistant. Rosenthal, himself a pupil of Maurice Ravel, was a formative influence, instilling in the younger man his passion for French music.

Opera has always been one of Jean-Luc Tingaud’s main interests. Since 2001 he has been a regular guest at the Wexford Festival where, amongst other things, he has conducted Massenet’s Sapho, Fauré’s Pénélope, and Chabrier’s Le roi malgré lui. Other engagements have included Hahn’s Ciboulette for Opera Zuid, Offenbach’s L’île de Tulipatan for Opéra National de Lyon, Le nozze di Figaro, Mireille, L’elisir d’amore, La bohème, Così fan tutte, Carmen and Faust at the Théâtre d’Herblay in Paris, Berlioz’s Roméo et Juliette at the Teatro Nacional de Sao Carlos in Lisbon, Tosca in Besançon, Werther at the Festival della Valle d’Itria in Martina Franca, La damnation de Faust in Reims, Véronique in Metz, Pelléas et Mélisande and Carmen at the Opéra de Toulon, Hahn’s Mozart at the Spoleto Festival, Carmen for Palm Beach Opera, Le siège de Corinthe at the Rossini Festival in Wildbad, Faust at the Macerata Festival, The Turn of the Screw at the Opéra de Lille, Pelléas et Mélisande in Rennes, L’heure espagnole with l’Atelier Lyrique de l’Opéra de Paris, Dialogues des carmélites and Madama Butterfly for Pittsburgh Opera and Pelléas et Mélisande at the Prague National Theatre.

His discography includes Sapho recorded at Wexford (Fonè), Werther recorded at Martina Franca (Dynamic), La voix humaine recorded at Compiègne (DVD) and Le siège de Corinthe (Naxos) recorded at Bad Wildbad. He has recently recorded two further CDs for Naxos with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra in Dublin, the first, of music by Dukas (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, La péri and Symphony in C) and the second, of music by Bizet (Roma, Patrie, Jeux d’enfants etc.) both of which have received outstanding reviews. A third new CD, of music by d’Indy (including Symphony No.2) with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, has just been released.

In 2004 he made his London debut at the Barbican conducting the English Chamber Orchestra with soloists Joshua Bell and Steven Isserlis. Other orchestras he has worked with include the Ulster Orchestra, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the Orchestra of Opera North, the Orchestra Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini, the Orchestra of the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genova, the Orchestra of the Teatro Massimo in Palermo, the Warsaw and Krakow Philharmonic Orchestras, the Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire, Orchestre National de Lyon, Orchestre Symphonique de Mulhouse, Orchestre National de Lorraine, Orchestre de Picardie and Orchestre de Bretagne.

Recent engagements have included The Pearl Fishers for English National Opera, a concert performance of La bohème at the Salle Pleyel with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, his debut at the Arena di Verona conducting Roméo et Juliette with a cast including Vittorio Grigolo and Lana Kos, and La fille du régiment at the Teatro Real in Madrid.

Future plans include Herculanum by Félicien David at the Wexford Festival, a tour of UK venues, including London, with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in November 2016, and in June 2017 he will open The Grange Festival with a new production of Carmen directed by Annabel Arden. Two further recordings for Naxos are planned, of music by Poulenc with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, and Franck with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.

Bizet : Symphony Roma, Petite Suite, etc (Ireland RTÉ National Symphony, Tingaud)

The performances are supremely elegant. This is an important release, and highly recommended.
Tim Ashley - The Guardian 12.03.2015
This disc offers delights aplenty, not least to thanks to Jean-Luc Tingaud's stylish and alert conducting.
Roger Nichols - BBC music magazine 04.2015
Tingaud and his admirably eager and scrupulously prepared RTE forces do it proud. More please Naxos !
Andrew Achenbach - Gramophone 05.2015
[Tingaud is] an exceptionally buoyant yet exacting conductor. Rhythms are absolutely spot on… That’s something that so many conductors are so often careless with and why so many recordings lack the snap or alertness or upbeat clarity that Tingaud has here.

Madama Butterfly

Puccini – Madama Butterfly / Pittsburgh Opera, march 2013

French conductor Jean-Luc Tingaud's energetic leading of the pit orchestra created an enveloping ambiance. His was a compelling interpretation that somehow was chamber orchestralike while also being intensely emotional, and the musicians responded well.
Andrew Druckenbrod- Pittsburgh Post Gazette 19.03.2013
The subtleties Tingaud achieved were remarkable, and delicacy is certainly apt for this score.

Bizet - Pearl Fishers ...

Bizet – Pearl Fishers / English National Opera, june 2014

I greatly admired Jean-Luc Tingaud’s conducting. It drew convincing Gallic sounds from the orchestra, with some particularly well-characterized woodwind playing and some oriental asides from the percussion, and subtly injected a bit of fire into Bizet’s not-yet-fully-formed Romanticism.
Peter Reed - Opera Magazine 08.2014
The young French conductor Jean-Luc Tingaud obtained sensitive and excellent playing from the ENO Orchestra. His direction was completely sure-footed and dramatically sound, and singer-friendly. The choral singing was also outstanding, full-bodied and enthusiastic.
Alan Sanders - Classical Source 19.06.2014
Jean-Luc Tingaud, making his ENO debut had exactly the right approach to the work and made the best possible case for it. The orchestra are having a particularly strong season and this continued their fine level of work. Tingaud carefully trod the line between some extremely sensitive accompaniment of the delicate arias and duets and whipping up a veritable storm at the climaxes.

Vaughan-Williams Strauss Britten / Parma, Filarmonica Toscanini, décembre 2013

Vaughan-Williams Strauss Britten / Parma, Filarmonica Toscanini, décembre 2013

Maestro Jean-Luc Tingaud’s command of the dramatic undulations of Rossini’s score is impressive, his taut conducting ensuring precision in the rapid-fire music of the opera’s more extroverted passages but also allowing lovely expansion in moments of repose. The tempo adopted for the Act Three trio for Pamyra, Cléomène, and Néoclès is an excellent example of Maestro Tingaud’s well-judged pacing of the performance as a whole: seeming slow at first, the inherent rightness of Maestro Tingaud’s choice becomes apparent as the dramatic import of the scene unfolds and the singers have the time required to shape their passages of filigree, place the critical top notes, and genuinely respond to one another. In this last consideration, this recording is a splendid example of the gains in dramatic impact that can be achieved from recording live performances, even those given in concert: the emotional directness and responsiveness with which the ensemble—soloists, chorus, orchestra, and conductor—deliver the music are dazzling.
Joseph Newsome - Voix des arts 22.06.2013
The orchestra plays brilliantly, with expert precision and ensemble, throughout the performance. Conductor Jean-Luc Tingaud brings great style and dramatic pacing to the proceedings; the finales are particularly exciting and bristling with energy.

Dukas : Symphony in C Major / L’apprenti sorcier / La Peri (Ireland RTÉ National Symphony, Tingaud)

Dukas : Symphony in C Major / L’apprenti sorcier / La Peri (Ireland RTÉ National Symphony, Tingaud)

A warm welcome to this clear-headed and uncommonly sensitive account under Jean-Luc Tingaud. Not only does the Frenchman secure a commendably polished and infectiously enthusiastic response from the RTE National SO, he shapes this glorious music with pleasing character, flexibility and authority. The slumbering, gorgeously lyrical slow movement goes especially well - and how satisfyingly he negociates the symphony's giddily thrusting closing pages. Tingaud's is certainly a version to reckon with and should be snapped up by anyone who has yet to fall under the spell of this criminally underrated score. The remaining items receive no less convincing treatment : L'Apprenti Sorcier sounds as fresh as the day it was conceived, possessing swagger, point and mischief to spare while Tingaud's La Peri is also up there with the very best.
Andrew Achenbach - Gramophone 01.2015
Though there’s no shortage of good versions of Paul Dukas’s three principal orchestral works already available on disc, there’s certainly room for another, especially when it’s played with the energy and vivid characterisation that Jean-Luc Tingaud and the RTE Symphony bring to it. In the poème dansé La Péri – arguably his greatest achievement and one of the neglected masterpieces of the early 20th century – Dukas’s music sometimes comes close to the so-called impressionism of Debussy and Ravel. But while never neglecting those colouristic aspects, Tingaud’s big-boned performances show how its stylistic roots reach back into a much wider range of 19th-century European models.
Andrew Clements - The Guardian 27.11.2014

Chabrier – Le Roi malgré lui / Wexford Festival Opera, october 2012

Fortunately, the orchestra was in the expert hands of conductor Jean-Luc Tingaud. Musically, Le Roi Malgré Lui is as detailed and busy as the libretto, but Tingaud threw the cues with dizzying speed and precision, creating a performance that was both exciting and at times quite soulful.
Brian Kellow, Opera News - february 2013 - Vol.77, N°8
Jean-Luc Tingaud conducted with great spirit, and the chorus and orchestra surpassed themselves.
Rodney Milnes, Opera - january 2013
Conductor Jean-Luc Tingaud relished the inventive score.
Tom Sutcliffe, Opera Now - january 2013
Jean-Luc Tingaud's conducting ensured a gallic flavour for Chabrier's delectable score.
Hugh Canning, Sunday Times - 4 nov. 2012
Jean-Luc Tingaud serves up a polished and lively account of the score, with the orchestra on stilysh form.
Hugo Shirley, The Daily Telegraph - 29 oct. 2012
For much of the evening, there is one show taking place on stage and another opera being played, often very beautifully, under Jean-Luc Tingaud's direction, in the orchestra pit.
